The Jeep Grand Cherokee has been a go-to family SUV for more than 30 years, and the 2026 model brings a strong round of updates. A new 2.0 L Hurricane 4 Turbo engine, a larger 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a freshened front end all arrive this year.
The Grand Cherokee also comes in two sizes: the two-row Grand Cherokee and the three-row Grand Cherokee L. Both share the same engines, the same towing rating and the same Jeep 4x4 know-how. The real difference is space, so this guide compares seating, cargo room and size to help you pick the right one for your household.

Seating: Five or Seven
The two-row Grand Cherokee seats five, with a three-person bench in the second row. It suits families with one to three kids who do not need a third row every day.
The Grand Cherokee L adds a third row for up to seven passengers. Second-row bucket seats come standard, and an optional 60/40 second-row bench brings the count to seven. Jeep says the Grand Cherokee L offers the most second-row legroom in its class and more passenger volume than any vehicle in its class. Second-row riders get 1,000 mm of legroom, and third-row passengers get 770 mm. Available third-row USB chargers keep devices powered for everyone in the back.
Cargo Space: How Much Room Do You Need?

Cargo space is where the two models really separate. The Grand Cherokee offers 1,068 L behind the second row, which fits strollers, groceries and sports bags with room to spare. Fold the second row and you get 2,005 L.
The Grand Cherokee L goes further. Even with all three rows in use, it holds 487 L behind the third row, and Jeep says that is more cargo room behind the third row than competitor SUVs. Fold the third row for 1,328 L, or fold both rear rows for 2,396 L. For families who haul hockey gear, camping equipment or luggage for seven, the L model makes packing much easier.
Size and Everyday Driving
The two-row Grand Cherokee is 290 mm shorter than the Grand Cherokee L, which makes it easier to fit into tight garages and busy parking lots. Its 11.58 m turning diameter helps with U-turns and parking manoeuvres.
The Grand Cherokee L uses a longer 3,091 mm wheelbase, which gives rear passengers more room to stretch out. If your driveway and garage have space for a longer SUV, the L model's extra length pays off every time you load the whole crew.
Same Power, Same Towing
Both models share the same two engines. The new 2.0 L Hurricane 4 Turbo 4-cylinder engine makes 324 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque on regular gasoline. It uses Turbulent Jet Ignition technology for a faster, cleaner burn, and it delivers 162 hp per litre. The proven 3.6 L Pentastar V6 makes 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both engines use an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Towing is identical too. The Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L each tow up to 2,812 kg (6,200 lbs), which covers a small camper or a boat. Available Selec-Terrain and Quadra-Trac II 4x4 systems keep both models sure-footed in snow and on gravel roads.
Technology and Safety for Every Row
Every 2026 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L gets a new 31.2 cm (12.3-inch) infotainment screen. Families can add features that make road trips easier:
- Rear-facing FamCAM lets the driver keep an eye on passengers in the back.
- Class-exclusive front-passenger display measuring 26 cm (10.25-inch) lets a co-pilot handle navigation and media.
- Active Driving Assist provides hands-free driving help on the highway.
- McIntosh 19-speaker audio, Night Vision and a 360-degree camera are available on upper trims.
Standard safety features include Active Lane Management, Rear Park Assist, Blind-spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path detection and Automatic Emergency Braking.
Which Model Is Right for Your Family?
Choose the two-row 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee if your family has up to five members, you want an SUV that is easier to park, and you value a roomy 1,068 L cargo area behind the second row.
Choose the three-row 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee L if you carpool, travel with grandparents or have a growing family. Its extra row, longer wheelbase and 2,396 L maximum cargo space give you room for seven people and their gear.
No matter which size you pick, you get the same engines, the same 2,812 kg (6,200 lbs) towing rating and the same Jeep capability.
